Sexuality and Sexual Dysfunction in Elderly People
±è¸í¾Ö
Abstract
The intention of this review was to explore sexuality, biological and psychological factor of sexuality, and pathologic changes, including the assessment and management of sexual dysfunction, It has been established that the need and desire to function sexually continues throughout the life span. It is the role of the nurse to disregard the myths of society toward the sexual practices of older adults, and to assist older adults in reaching sexual potential. Many normal and pathologic changes are common on older men and women. However, most of these changes can be compensated for so that the older adult can continue to practice sexually.

With a thorough nursing assessment and management of the normal and pathologic changes of the aging sexual system, the older adults is free to pursue sexuality as desired. Nursing goals and strategies need to address identifying sexual problems and educating elderly patients about altered sexual needs. To do this, nurses must be knowledgeable about the physiology and sexual needs of older adults, and understand their own values and attitudes regarding sex and sexuality. The end result can be an older adult who is able to pursue the highest quality of life.
